Alocasia Black Velvet (Alocasia reginula) is a rare and stunning jewel alocasia that's highly coveted by plant collectors worldwide! This compact beauty features thick, velvety, almost black leaves with striking silvery-white veining that creates a dramatic contrast. The leaves have an incredible texture that looks and feels like luxurious velvet, making it one of the most tactile and visually stunning plants you can own.
Unlike larger Alocasia varieties, Black Velvet stays compact, making it perfect for small spaces, terrariums, and plant collections. Each leaf is a work of art with its deep, dark coloration and prominent white veins that seem to glow against the black background!
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. The dramatic coloration is best maintained with adequate light. Can tolerate medium light but growth will slow. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the delicate velvety leaves and fade the beautiful dark color.
Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Alocasias like consistently moist soil but are sensitive to overwatering. Ensure excellent drainage and never let the plant sit in water. Reduce watering in winter when the plant may go semi-dormant.
Humidity: High humidity (60-80%) is essential! This tropical beauty loves moisture in the air. Increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing on a pebble tray, grouping plants together, or growing in a terrarium. Low humidity will cause brown leaf edges and stunted growth.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-27°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations which can cause stress.
Soil: Use well-draining, rich aroid mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and peat moss works perfectly. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer: Feed every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Alocasias are heavy feeders during active growth. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years in spring when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one. Use fresh aroid mix.
Dormancy: Alocasia Black Velvet may go semi-dormant in winter, losing some or all leaves. This is natural! Reduce watering and stop fertilizing. New growth will emerge in spring.
This rare beauty requires special attention:
Propagate by division during repotting. Carefully separate rhizomes with at least one growth point and some roots. Plant in fresh aroid mix and keep warm and humid until established. Can also produce offsets (baby plants) that can be separated.
Important: Alocasia Black Velvet is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause severe irritation and swelling. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Own this rare velvet beauty at an incredible price! The Alocasia Black Velvet is a true collector's gem that will be the crown jewel of your plant collection!
