The Rhoeo Plant, also known as Moses in the Cradle, Boat Lily, or Oyster Plant (Tradescantia spathacea), is a stunning tropical plant featuring beautiful sword-shaped leaves with vibrant pink undersides and green tops. This eye-catching variety creates a dramatic two-toned display that adds instant color and tropical flair to any space!
The unique boat-shaped bracts that cradle small white flowers give this plant its common name 'Moses in the Cradle.' The pink variety is especially prized for its intense pink to purple coloration on the leaf undersides, creating a beautiful contrast with the green upper surfaces. This hardy, low-maintenance plant is perfect for both indoor and outdoor growing in warm climates!
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade. The pink coloration is most vibrant with adequate light. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight. Can adapt to medium light but colors may be less intense.
Water: Water when the top 3-5 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Prefers consistently moist soil but is quite drought-tolerant once established. Ensure good drainage and never let the plant sit in water. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate humidity (40-60%) but tolerates average household humidity well. Not particularly fussy about humidity levels, making it very adaptable.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-30°C. Can tolerate brief temperature drops but protect from frost and freezing temperatures. Ideal for tropical and subtropical climates.
Soil: Use well-draining potting mix. A standard houseplant mix with added perlite or sand works well. Good drainage is important to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves at the base. Prune to maintain shape and control size. The plant naturally forms a rosette shape with minimal pruning needed.
Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years in spring when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot slightly larger than the current one.
Rosette Form: Grows in a compact rosette pattern with leaves radiating from the center.
Clumping Growth: Produces offsets (baby plants) around the base, creating fuller clumps over time.
Unique Flowers: Small white flowers appear in boat-shaped purple bracts nestled between the leaves.
Colorful Display: The pink undersides are visible as leaves arch and overlap, creating a stunning multi-colored effect.
Very easy to propagate! Remove offsets (baby plants) that form around the base of the mother plant. Gently separate with roots attached and pot in fresh soil. Can also propagate by stem cuttings - cut below a node and place in water or moist soil until roots develop.
Indoor: Perfect for bright windowsills, shelves, and tabletops. Adds tropical color to any room.
Outdoor: Excellent ground cover or border plant in warm climates. Thrives in partial shade gardens and tropical landscapes.
Note: Rhoeo plants contain sap that can cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. While not highly toxic, it's best to keep out of reach of pets and children and wash hands after handling.
Bring vibrant tropical beauty to your space with the stunning Rhoeo Plant (Pink) - a hardy, colorful showstopper that's perfect for everyone!
