Plant Type: Live Air Plant | No Soil Needed | Free Delivery
Spanish Moss, scientifically known as Tillandsia usneoides, is a rare and unique air plant that creates a stunning, ethereal display with its long, silvery-gray cascading strands. Despite its name, it's not actually a moss but rather a flowering epiphytic plant in the Bromeliad family. This fascinating plant doesn't require soil and absorbs water and nutrients directly from the air through its specialized scales!
Native to the southeastern United States, Central America, and South America, Spanish Moss has been used for centuries in crafts, decorations, and even as nesting material for birds. Its delicate, hair-like appearance adds a mystical, romantic touch to any space, making it perfect for hanging displays, terrariums, and creative botanical arrangements!
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade. Can tolerate lower light conditions but grows best with good filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight which can dry out and damage the delicate strands. East or north-facing windows are ideal.
Water: Mist thoroughly 2-3 times per week, or soak in water for 10-20 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake gently to remove excess water and hang to dry completely. Spanish Moss absorbs water through its scales, so ensure good air circulation for drying. In humid environments, reduce watering frequency.
Humidity: Loves high humidity (60-80%). Thrives in naturally humid environments like bathrooms or kitchens. In dry climates, increase misting frequency or use a humidifier nearby.
Temperature: Prefers moderate to warm temperatures between 15-30°C. Can tolerate brief temperature drops but protect from frost and freezing temperatures. Avoid placing near heating/cooling vents.
Air Circulation: Essential for healthy growth! Ensure good air flow around the plant, especially after watering. Poor air circulation can lead to rot. Never leave Spanish Moss in a sealed container while wet.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during growing season (spring and summer) with diluted air plant or bromeliad fertilizer at quarter strength. Mist fertilizer solution onto the plant. Skip feeding in fall and winter.
Epiphytic Nature: Grows on other plants or structures without being parasitic - doesn't need soil!
Slow Growing: Patient growers are rewarded with long, beautiful strands over time.
Cascading Form: Naturally grows in long, hanging strands that can reach several feet in length.
Tiny Flowers: Produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in spring/summer.
Spanish Moss propagates naturally by fragmentation. Simply separate a strand and hang it in appropriate conditions. The separated piece will continue growing and can be shared with friends or used to create fuller displays.
Good news: Spanish Moss is non-toxic to pets and humans! It's safe for homes with cats, dogs, and children. However, it can harbor small insects in outdoor settings, so inspect before bringing indoors.
Add a touch of ethereal beauty to your space with this rare and unique Spanish Moss - a living work of art that's as easy to care for as it is stunning!
