The Philodendron Congo Rojo, also known as Red Congo Philodendron, is a stunning self-heading (non-climbing) philodendron prized for its dramatic burgundy-red new growth that matures to deep green with reddish undertones. This compact, upright variety creates a bold statement with its large, glossy leaves and vibrant coloration.
Unlike vining philodendrons, the Congo Rojo grows in a rosette pattern from a central stem, making it perfect for tabletops, desks, and floor displays. The spectacular red new leaves emerging from the center create a stunning contrast against the mature dark green foliage!
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. The vibrant red coloration is most pronounced with adequate light. Can tolerate medium light but new growth may be less vibrant and growth will slow. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.
Water: Water when the top 3-5 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Prefers consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Ensure excellent drainage and never let the plant sit in water. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity (50-70%). While tolerant of average household humidity, higher humidity promotes larger, glossier leaves and more vibrant coloration. Increase humidity by misting, using a humidifier, or placing on a pebble tray.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-27°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations.
Soil: Use well-draining, rich potting mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and peat moss works well. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer: Feed every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Regular feeding promotes vibrant new growth and maintains the beautiful red coloration. Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years in spring when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot 2-3 inches larger than the current one. Use fresh potting mix.
Pruning: Minimal pruning needed. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base using clean, sharp scissors. The self-heading growth habit naturally maintains a compact shape.
The spectacular burgundy-red new leaves are the highlight of this plant:
Philodendron Congo Rojo can be propagated by division or stem cuttings. Division is easiest - when repotting, carefully separate offshoots with roots from the main plant. For stem cuttings, take a cutting with at least one node and place in water or moist soil until roots develop.
Important: Philodendron Congo Rojo is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation and swelling. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
