The Philodendron Micans (Philodendron hederaceum 'Micans'), also known as the Velvet-Leaf Philodendron, is a popular, easy-care trailing or climbing houseplant prized for its unique, velvety, heart-shaped leaves that emerge a beautiful chartreuse/pink and mature to a deep, iridescent, bronze-green with hints of purple.
This stunning variety is perfect for hanging baskets or trained to climb a moss pole, creating a cascading display of soft, touchable foliage that catches the light beautifully. The velvety texture and color-changing leaves make it a favorite among plant collectors and beginners alike!
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate medium to low light but growth will slow and colors may be less vibrant. Avoid direct sunlight which can fade the beautiful colors and scorch the delicate leaves.
Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Philodendron Micans prefers consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Allow excess water to drain freely. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity (50-70%). Increase humidity by misting regularly, using a humidifier, grouping plants together, or placing on a pebble tray. The velvety leaves especially love humidity!
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-27°C. Protect from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 15°C.
Soil: Use well-draining, airy potting mix. A blend of regular potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works perfectly. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
Support: Provide a moss pole or trellis if you want larger leaves and upward growth. For a trailing effect, grow in a hanging basket and let the vines cascade down.
Pruning: Prune to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Cut just above a node using clean, sharp scissors. Cuttings can be propagated easily!
Philodendron Micans is incredibly easy to propagate! Take stem cuttings with at least one node and a few leaves. Place in water or moist soil until roots develop (usually 2-3 weeks). Once roots are 5-7 cm long, pot in soil.
Important: Philodendron Micans is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Transform your space with this gorgeous, velvety Philodendron Micans - a plant that's as beautiful as it is easy to care for!
