Begonia 'Silver Queen' is a classic and elegant foliage begonia admired for its large, silver-toned leaves accented with deep green veins and margins. This timeless variety is popular among both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and relatively manageable care requirements.
Primarily grown for its foliage rather than flowers, Begonia 'Silver Queen' adds brightness and texture to indoor spaces, shaded patios, and protected garden corners. The stunning silver leaves create a luminous effect that brightens any room!
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the delicate silver leaves. Perfect for north or east-facing windows. Can tolerate lower light conditions, making it ideal for offices and shaded areas.
Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Begonias prefer consistently moist soil but are sensitive to overwatering. Ensure good drainage and never let the plant sit in water. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity (50-70%). Increase humidity by placing on a pebble tray, grouping with other plants, or using a humidifier. Avoid misting directly on leaves as this can cause spotting and fungal issues.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-24°C. Protect from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 15°C. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations.
Soil: Use well-draining, light potting mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and regular potting soil works well. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer: Feed every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years in spring when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one, as begonias prefer to be slightly pot-bound.
Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. Pinch back leggy growth to encourage bushier habit. Clean pruning tools before use to prevent disease spread.
Begonia 'Silver Queen' can be propagated through leaf cuttings or division. For leaf cuttings, take a healthy leaf with stem and place in moist soil or water until roots develop. Division can be done during repotting by gently separating the rhizomes.
Note: Begonias contain oxalates and can be mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested. May cause mild irritation. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Bring timeless elegance to your space with the stunning Begonia 'Silver Queen' - a classic beauty that's as easy to care for as it is beautiful!
